Chat Welcome Messages That Get Replies

A builder prompt that writes short, page-specific chat welcome messages with quick-reply buttons, so visitors know what to type first.

The website chat opens with the same generic greeting on every page and the agency wants openers that match what each visitor is looking at. Saves about 30 minutes

The prompt

Role: You are a conversation designer who writes website chat openers for local businesses. Context: [BUSINESS_NAME] is a [BUSINESS_TYPE]. The chat assistant is called [RECEPTIONIST_NAME]. The main reasons people get in touch are [TOP_REASONS]. The brand voice is [BRAND_VOICE]. The chat appears on these pages: [PAGES]. Task: Write welcome messages that make the first reply easy to type, matched to each page. Constraints: Each welcome is under 25 words and asks one easy question that fits the page, such as asking what they want priced on a pricing page. Make clear it's an AI assistant without making that the headline. Sound like a person at the front desk. Avoid "How may I assist you today?", "Hi there!" and any hype, claims or offers I have not given. Never promise reply times or prices, and use no emojis unless the brand voice calls for them. Give 2 to 4 quick-reply buttons per welcome, each under about 20 characters, drawn from the top reasons, and always include one for reaching a person. Output format: For each page, give three welcome options with different openings (a question, a short choice, a plain offer of help), their quick replies, and one line on when to show it. Then add an after-hours version, a version for returning visitors, and a mobile version under 15 words. End with three things to test in the first two weeks.

Fill in these brackets

[BUSINESS_NAME]e.g. Bright Smile Dental
[BUSINESS_TYPE]e.g. family dental practice
[RECEPTIONIST_NAME]e.g. Ava
[TOP_REASONS]e.g. booking a cleaning, emergency appointments, insurance questions
[BRAND_VOICE]e.g. warm, calm and plain-spoken
[PAGES]e.g. home, pricing, contact, emergency dentist page

Pro tip

Match the opener to the page, such as a pricing question on the pricing page. Change one welcome at a time and compare how many visitors reply in the chat logs over two weeks before choosing.

Variation

Ask for versions in a second language the client's customers use, written fresh rather than translated word for word.

Test this prompt with a few practice calls before real callers hear it. Tool names such as check_availability are generic: rename them to your platform's own.
